Can-Am Maverick X3 Catch Can — Do You Really Need One?

The Can-Am Maverick X3 is one of the most powerful and capable UTVs ever built. With turbocharged engines producing anywhere from 120 to 200+ horsepower depending on the variant, the X3 is a serious performance machine. But that power comes with a serious maintenance consideration that many X3 owners overlook: crankcase blow-by and oil contamination.

The short answer to the question in the title: yes, you need a catch can — and here's exactly why.

What Makes the X3 Especially Vulnerable

The Can-Am Maverick X3's turbocharged Rotax engine is a high-performance powerplant that generates significant crankcase pressure, especially under boost. The factory Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system routes blow-by gases — a mixture of oil vapor, fuel mist, and moisture — back into the intake manifold.

This design was engineered for emissions compliance, not for the kind of abuse an X3 sees on the dunes, in the desert, or on the race course. Here's what happens without a catch can:

  • Oil vapor coats your intake valves — causing carbon buildup that reduces airflow and power over time
  • Fuel and moisture contaminate your engine oil — diluting it and reducing its protective properties
  • Octane levels drop in the combustion chamber — increasing knock risk, especially on aggressive tunes
  • MAP sensors and intake components get coated in oil mist — causing misfires, fault codes, and performance issues
  • Turbo seals can be affected — oil contamination in the intake side of the turbo accelerates wear

These issues compound over time. The more miles you put on your X3 — especially under boost — the worse the blow-by gets. If you're running a tune, E85, or any kind of power adder, the problem is significantly amplified.

Why Generic Catch Cans Fail on the X3

Here's the problem most X3 owners run into: they buy a generic "universal" catch can from an online retailer, install it, and then discover oil spraying everywhere after their first hard run.

Generic catch cans are designed for street cars — smooth roads, moderate RPMs, and no lateral G-forces. The Can-Am X3 operates in a completely different environment: hard hits through whoops, aggressive cornering, sustained high RPM in the dunes, and constant vibration. A poorly designed catch can simply can't contain oil under those conditions.

We've seen it firsthand at our shop. That's exactly why we spent years developing a purpose-built solution.

The Diamond Performance X3 Catch Can

Our Multi-Chambered Catch Can for the Can-Am Maverick X3 was engineered specifically for off-road use. Every design decision was made with the X3's operating environment in mind.

Multi-Chambered Baffled Design

The multi-chamber, fully baffled internal design is the key differentiator. Oil that enters the can gets trapped and separated through multiple chambers before it can escape — even under hard hits, aggressive cornering, and sustained high RPM. No oil blowout. No mess.

Non-Recirculating Design

We made a deliberate choice not to recirculate oil back into the engine. Why? Because we had oil analyzed from recirculating catch can systems and found significant fuel and water contamination in the oil. Sending that back into your engine is counterproductive. Our system separates and collects contaminants in a sealed reservoir instead.

Built for the X3 Specifically

This isn't a universal fit. Our X3 catch can is designed to fit under the factory bed, uses the factory hose routing, and installs with a 100% bolt-on clamp-on design. No cutting, no fabrication, no modifications to your machine.

Who Needs This?

X3 Owner Type Need a Catch Can?
Stock engine, light trail riding Recommended — good preventive protection
Any tune or power adder ✅ Absolutely essential
E85 fuel ✅ Critical — E85 increases blow-by significantly
High mileage (5,000+ miles) ✅ Essential — blow-by increases with engine wear
Dune / desert / race use ✅ Essential — sustained high RPM amplifies blow-by

Protect Your X3 Investment

A Can-Am Maverick X3 is a significant investment. The catch can is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect that investment and extend the life of your engine. Don't wait until you're seeing oil in your intake or getting knock codes on your tune.
